Regional journalists maintain that the main obstacle to the development of the media markets in Russia is the authorities’ interference in the work of the mass media. The demonstration of their strength plunges the journalistic community into pessimism. More than a third of our colleagues believes that the media markets in Russia will never become transparent, open and honest.

The economic crisis deals another blow at the press. How should the holes in the editorial budgets due to the loss of ads and reduction of circulation be mended? The creation of new contents with more social problems brings new risks instead of new income.
The press and journalists in Russia are taken as a nuisance with which there is no need to stand on ceremony.

The compensatory process is when other organs of the human body take up the function of the impaired ones. Similarly, our fellow-compatriots who used to write to newspaper editorial offices and TV plunge into the Internet, which becomes a haven for those seeking justice and a virtual force forming reality.

Perhaps, the Russian press has become submitted to and suppressed by the powerful instruments of the authorities.
“The press should serve those who are ruled, but not those who rule,” the journalist Gene Meiter said recently.

During the past twenty year we were unable to explain not only to the higher-ups, but also to our fellow-citizens what the real press means and why it is necessary for a healthy society.
It’s time to return to common truths.
